As of recently, I'm pitching-in on maintenance of the Ruby module for SWIG.
If you have a minute, could you *please* review the bug list at the SF site
and let me know specifically which bugs are on your hot list. I'll see if I
can get those resolved. Note that we've already made a lot of fixes in the
CVS version (which will be released as SWIG-1.3.10) that may address the
problems you're seeing.

I am slowly getting up to speed on SWIG's architecture, etc. and hope to be
able to contribute more to the development and maintenance of the Ruby
module in the future. I've also started on some docs for the same but have
not submitted those to Dave yet.
