I noticed the "X-ruby: header" option on the poll -- but there already
is an "X-Mail-Count:" header that holds the post number.

Anyway, I answered "I use Gnus, so I don't care."  You can get Gnus to
get rid of the [ruby-talk:9999] stuff by putting this in your .gnus:

    (setq gnus-list-identifiers '("\\[ruby-talk:[0-9]+\\]"))
