A happy exception to the uselessness of typical "small/tiny/synthetic/micro" benchmarks was John Gustafson's "Hierarchical INTegration" (HINT) benchmark. It's tough to find the source for it on the web, but if you Google for "Gustafson HINT Benchmark" you may turn up a copy.
