However the data I have available indicate that compiling ruby for i486 
(afaik Debian compiles for i486 and not i386) instead of against i686 
doesn't matter much:

Which would make a difference of rougly 4%.

Am I misstaken?

Anything else that sucks so bad with Debian packaging?
