I'm not suggesting adding a new object type, but rather a new reference type. It's not a particularly good solution, since as you pointed out above, this would keep you from using the object with 3rd-party libraries that don't expect a reference-counted object (though in solution #1, you would get unexpected behavior, but in solution #2, it wouldn't work at all).
