Depending on the database, two popular solutions are

  * Ruby/DBI  (www.ruby-projects.org/dbi)
  * Ruby/ODBC (www.ch-werner.de)

Both are database independent and work for both UNIX and Windows
systems. Alternatively use the database depending module; see Ruby's
Application Archive section Library/Database.
