Ruby/DBI is a wrapper around the more special database modules providing
a common interface, so you can smoothly switch form one database to
another.

when you only want to use MySQL and have no plans for changing this
then you better use MySQL/Ruby, because Ruby/DBI works on top of this
which doesn't make it faster of course. Also, there might be some
parts in MySQL/Ruby which are not part of Ruby/DBI, because DBI, as I
said, only provides a common api, but does not support MySQL specific
functionality AFAIK.
