Please ask @ the XSL list (It's 99% about XSLT, and thus includes XPath)

there are many highly proficient experts, willing to answer questions
(Mike Kay/Saxon etc.)
(especially if you tell them you're implementing XPath).

Also, you could look @ the sources of Saxon and other good implementations.
