Hi,

Thanks for all the responses, which made me look further into the
installation procedure.  Yes, I installed cygwin using
http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe.  However, the selection window is
pretty confusing; it took some trial and error before finally I
understood what each icon means and I could obtain gcc.

Cygwin is pretty cool.  With it, I could even install Ruby 1.6.5 from
the source code (ruby-1.6.5.tar.gz) which is posted at
http://cygwin.com home page.  However, using Ruby that was created in
cygwin, I got error when I tried to invoke Ruby/Tk.  The same Ruby/Tk
script works fine with Ruby for Windows that already precompiled by
pragmaticprogrammer.com.  In particular, developing Ruby from source
in cygwin does not create "tcltklib.so".

My question is, is the precompiled version in pragmaticprogrammer.com
really different from what I will get if I compile Ruby from source
under cygwin?  If yes, which additional source files do I need so that
I get the same set of stuff that is bundled in the
pragmaticprogrammer.com version?  Thanks.
