Joe Armstrong's new book published by the Pragmatic Programmers is extremely approachable. you could still use Ruby for a client, especially if you want to leverage Ruby 2D graphics APIs (as opposed to pure ASCII / tty ala NetHack / Rogue / Cave Adventure).
