The point is not the ability to create fancy scalable or non-square buttons. The important thing is that it is a really promising technology for realtime interactive drawing platform on the web - and therefore also responsive web-applications. SVG in place of a desktop GUI toolkit is not really interesting in itself (unless it really can beat the alternatives on quality crossplatform development). But many applications are today being written for the Web at the cost of reduced usability and responsiveness. The need for Web'ed applications is huge. This is where SVG Gui's can become really interesting - much more than ..Net's Web development tools. Of course - if it runs on the web it also runs locally. It may well become the foundation of tomorrows GUI's. The big issues with SVG that remains are 1) SVG has the infrastructure but lacks good language bindings for interactive programming. 2) the viewers are not quite good enough or standardized enough yet.
