And my point is that we don't really know whether 99% of
applications require strict compatibility, or whether 99%
would be fine with an approximation. 

Or, more to the point, there *are* applications where it is
not useless. The statements I questioned were implying that
a non-conforming parser were (almost) universally useless,
which is certainly false.

If you need C++, then Ruby is useless. If you need a
Windows machine, then Linux is useless. If you need a
conforming XML parser, then a non-conforming parser is
useless.
