It's also a good way to learn some of the more subtle aspects of Ruby.
Quite educational to work through the code, translating it (or at least commenting it) into more vanilla Ruby.

And, you can show something like that to a hardened Perl fanatic, and he or she will might start thinking Ruby has potential.
