Mongrel is just a wonderfully efficient Ruby server :) I'm particularly fond of the Pound / Mongrel combo myself, and Pound does handle SSL. If you use Mongrel, you can easily scale as well, as you can have multiple machines running Mongrels with one Pound over them.
