what about setting defaults the other way round?
will it cause harm (i.e. strange errors) if ipv6 with
the lookup-order-hack is set but not needed?

I remember that I recompiled a kernel about 2.4.6 with
ipv6 disabled and ruby worked out of the box.

so: What about setting the flags if running on
linux 2.4 and ipv6 available? If this runs without
errors, a lot of socket using people are at least
not going to be sad :-)
