This was also my first though, but it doesn't work:

  ~ % irb
  irb(main):001:0> exit rescue SystemExit
  ~ % 

Chads example works:

  ~ % irb
  irb(main):001:0> begin exit; rescue SystemExit; end
  nil
  irb(main):002:0>
