Matt,

This is a human idiom, not machine-readable.
The # is used when referring to an instance 
method as opposed to . for a class method.

Note that in Ruby, class methods and instance
methods can have the same names, i.e., 
Class.foobar and Class#foobar are certainly
different methods. (Even the standard classes
do this, so I don't think it's considered bad.)
