I suspect the people saying this are not programmers (especially the person who said that we should all just "standardise behind C++"). I'm a first year CS student, and a pretty lousy C programmer[0]. I think I'm more likely to be doing monkey stuff with web scripting when I graduate than creating a professional operating system (Linus) or programming language (Matz). Despite this, it only took me *one day* to learn the most important parts of ruby[1]. It helps that the syntax is familiar. [0] I've also had one semester of writing Java code, have previously been exposed to some of the simple OO concepts, have worked through the first two chapters of SICP and have used regular expressions before. If I had never heard of OOP before, I would probably had a harder time getting to grips with ruby. [1] Thanks to Dave and Andrew for "Programming Ruby". I'm using the HTML version, but later on when I become rich I promise I'll buy edition two :) -- I called my parents the other night, but I forgot about the time difference.
