Check:

* That your CPU isn't overheating. Overclocked ? Fan fell off ?
  Poor ventilation (especially important on AMDs, which run very hot)

* Your RAM. SuSE Linux comes with a memory tester, which you can run
  from LILO at boot. Just select the 'memtest86' option and let it
  run for a couple of hours.

I had the same problem as you with an old machine. After running
memtest86 a few times, swapping DIMMs around until I found which one
was broken, and removing the culprit, the problem went away.
