Ed probably meant do...end, not begin...end.

This is the precedence issue:

def foo(*)
   puts "FOO" if block_given?
end

def bar(*)
   puts "BAR" if block_given?
end

foo bar do end
foo bar { }

Output:

FOO
BAR
