You don't need the split() method to get this syntax:

 >> require "uri"
=> false
 >> uri = URI.parse("http://www.ruby-lang.org")
=> #<URI::HTTP:0xa77416 URL:http://www.ruby-lang.org>
 >> uri.host
=> "www.ruby-lang.org"
