Installing BRU-Pro was a matter of sticking the CD in the drive, and waiting for the autostart daemon to pop up the installation screen (or running "install" if there was no autostart daemon on that particular platform). There was no need for seperate download or install of other components. Open Source software under GPL included was: 'mtx' 'lzop' probably others that I don't recall, it's been a while. Everything needed for a particular platform (such as Solaris, BSDi, SCO Unix, etc.) was in a tarball, one tarball per platform, with the exception of win32 which was in a single setup.exe file. Storing a GPL program in the same tarball as a non-GPL program does not somehow "infect" the non-GPL program, just as having GPL and non-GPL programs together on a hard drive does not somehow "infect" the non-GPL program. Tom Christianson probably will tell you different, but a) he's not a lawyer, and b) he has an ideological axe to grind. Source was provided for all GPL utilities under the /source subdirectory of the CDROM, thus fulfilling the requirements of the GPL. All of this was vetted by our corporate attorneys, who found no problems in the way we were doing things. In addition, one of our engineers fired off a query to Richard Stallman, who similarly said it was okay. There are people with an ideological axe to grind who go around spreading misinformation about what the GPL does and does not say. While I personally choose to release my own software under a BSD-style license (see, e.g., http://aescrypt.sourceforge.net ), you wish to consult your attorney, not Tom Christianson, if you want to know what is allowed and not allowed by a particular license. I believe the one we used at EST was the Wienberg Legal Group in Phoenix AZ. > -----Original Message----- > From: Eric Lee Green [mailto:eric@badtux.org] > Sent: Wednesday, November 07, 2001 9:29 AM > To: ruby-talk ML > Subject: [ruby-talk:24542] Re: kill rdtool? > > On Wednesday 07 November 2001 10:14 am, Mark Hahn wrote: > > I don't see how you could integrate (the I in IDE) the doc system in > > an IDE without calling the doc system. > > Same way that I integrated 'mtx' into BRU-Pro -- just call it as a > stand-alone program from your Ruby script, the same way you might call > 'awk' > or 'sed' (both of which are GPL on Linux).
