I have been using perl for the last few years. To start with I decided to run words frequency count for a benchmark test. Here are the results: file #1 (~ 0.5 Meg) file #2 (~ 6 Meg) freq.pl 3 seconds 19 seconds freq.rb 16 seconds 189 seconds I wrote freq.pl patterned it exactly on freq.rb (the one supplied in sample subdirectory). My question is why such a difference in speed? BTW I am using activestate's perl 5.6.1 (build 626).
