Because I do this, I'm compelled to tell you I do it >only< the way you decry - an external conversion program. ImageMagick's graphics conversion suite has very little room for improvement. I use 'import' to snap the current window, and 'convert' to juggle it between PS and PNG format. Each has an option to rotate wide pictures to landscape mode, and to fit the image to 8x11 inch paper size.
