It's working for me...

Darwin MacBookPro 8.8.2 Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.2: Thu Sep 28 20:43:26 
PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.14.14.obj~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386

First I set... CFLAGS=-O

then...

./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-pthread --with-readline-dir=/usr/local
make
make install
make install-doc

and it all went through fine... happy to share anything else that might 
help if you tell me what it is you need.
