If it helps, you can use scrollbars this way:

# example how to add scrollbars to items
require 'tk'
root = TkRoot.new
list = TkListbox.new(root, 'selectmode'=>'single')
list.yscrollbar(TkScrollbar.new(root).pack('side'=>'left', 'fill'=>'y'))
Tk.mainloop
