Try:

echo "int main(){return 0;}" > test.c
gcc test.c

If it fails, gcc probably doesn't have correct permissions or isn't
installed right.

Either way, you'll probably get a more specific error message.

If it works, ./configure is lying.

Perhaps sudo first?

sudo ./configure
