This was the reason I decided to write GD::Graph, which only depends on libgd and the Perl libraries GD, GD::Graph and/or GD::Graph3d. It supports the following diagram types: Bars, Lines, Points, LinesPoints, Area, Mixed, Pie, Bars3d, Lines3d and Pie3d I guess libplot, Ruby/Gnuplot and Ruby/PGPlot are more for scientifical diagrams.
