Dunno about Windows, but on Linux, the ruby tree in /usr/local/lib/ruby zips 
down to 492K (using the pkzip work-alike on Linux, and leaving out libruby.a, 
which is only needed for compiling extension modules).

That has some stuff in it that you don't need for 'hello world' too, like the 
tk interface module, MySQL interface module, a statfs module that I wrote, 
etc. 

Add in the actual Ruby executable out of /usr/local/bin, and, hmm... comes 
out to exactly 1 megabyte. For interpreter and complete runtime.

If you're trying to fit onto a 1.44mb floppy, you can do a *LOT* in 440K of 
Ruby :-). 

So it does appear that Ruby currently has a reasonably lean runtime.
