The main thing that has kept Java from being used for consumer apps is the size of the distributables (VM, etc.). They range from 5 megs to 10 megs which is more that most windows users want to download. This is a much bigger problem for Java acceptance than the speed. Has anyone looked at how large the windows distributable zip file would be for a Ruby "hello world" program?
