I'm not really all that eager to write zlib in Ruby anyhow since it is very tedious and kind of hard to test. But it still might be interesting as a comparison. But as Robert mentioned maybe LZO would be better (at least to start.) I would be interested to see how a Ruby LZO decompressor compares in performance to the Java version (which on 1.1.7 without a JIT was getting something like 1.4 MB/s throughput compared to 58 MB/s for the C code.) This is according to the Java LZO README. I'd do my own benchmarks of course using the newest Java with the fancy Hotspot VM. Ryan Leavengood
