Hi, to follow up, I think the problem is a bit worse than I originally anticipated. I tried the obvious workround 1. Get the current directory using the `pwd` of your choice (into pd, say) 2. Dir.chdir into the subdirectory you want using #{pd} as a root path so here goes.... irb(main):001:0> `bash -c pwd` "/home/stehill1/tmp\n" irb(main):002:0> pd=`bash -c pwd`.chop! "/home/stehill1/tmp" irb(main):003:0> Dir.chdir(pd+"/test") 0 irb(main):004:0> `bash -c pwd` "/tmp_mnt/home/stehill1/tmp/test\n" so it looks like Dir.chdir will always put you into a hardware specific path. I woul have hoped that when I Dir.chdir into "/home/stehill1/tmp/test" I end up there, not in "/tmp_mnt/home/stehill1/tmp/test". Any thoughts? Best regards Steve
