Djm, The code you posted had a couple of problems with it... did you hand-type it?  But after I fixed those problems, I got it to run by putting a "." on the end of the first call to "append".  I think that may have been the cause of your parse error.

I stubbed out the "Song" class, since it wasn't included in what you posted to the list, and I deleted some extra "end" lines.  Here's what I got to work:

class Song
  def initialize(a, b, c)
  end
end

class SongList

  def initialize
    @songs = Array.new
  end

  def append(aSong)
    @songs.push(aSong)
    self
  end

  def deleteFirst
    @songs.shift
  end

  def deleteLast
    @songs.pop
  end

end

list = SongList.new
list.
  append(Song.new('title1', 'artist1', 1)).
  append(Song.new('title2', 'artist2', 2)).
  append(Song.new('title3', 'artist3', 3)).
  append(Song.new('title4', 'artist4', 4))
