Another great migration path is that most shell scripts are *almost* Ruby 
scripts, if you don't take take advantage of much of Ruby's internal 
structures.  Believe it or not, at the US Forest Service, they have a lot 
of large applications consisting almost entirely of masses of shell scripts 
gluing other stuff together.  Replacing them with Ruby is about as painless 
as you can get.
