Subject: gem install - install directory not absolute

When I run ...
sudo gem install rails -y

I get ...
ERROR:  While executing gem ... (ArgumentError)
     install directory "/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/./gems/ 
activesupport-1.4.0" not absolute

The directory /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/gems/activesupport-1.4.0 does  
exist.

Any suggestions on what I need to change?
I don't know why the "/./" appears in the path in the error message.
