I think "a" receives the message "x" only in the first case. The second one 
means '"a" receives the message "send" and the parameter ":x"'. The rest is 
similar with messages "method" and "respond_to?", both with parameter ":x".

It's up to the actions that will be startet to handle the parameter ":x".
