Another possibility if you're looking for device independence is to base 
everything on a VNC server, and then just use VNC clients to view it. This 
has the added benefits of cross-platform accessibility.

We're looking at doing this in Squeak, which uses BitBlt for everything 
(there is no line primitive, for instance).
