From: Thomas Stromberg Date: 2001-10-24T10:58:54+09:00 Subject: [ruby-talk:23132] Ruby on AIX -- ext/socket never compiled? I'm working on an open-source project (http://tzunami.sourceforge.net), that needs an easy way for people to run under AIX. The issue I have is two-fold: a) no nice package exists for them to install b) 1.6.5 & cvs refuse to compile under 4.3.3 with gcc 2.95.2 c) 1.6.4 skips ext/socket, crucial for the application to work. Any help on a, b, or c would be *much* appreciated, since I'm trying to make a Halloween release. Here is ruby-cvs & ruby 1.6.5 refuse to compile under AIX 4.3.3 with gcc 2.95.2: gcc -fPIC -g -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I/data/ruby/ext/digest/rmd160/.. -I/data/ruby -I/data/ruby -I/usr/local/include -DHAVE_SYS_CDEFS_H -DHAVE_INTTYPES_H -DHAVE_UNISTD_H -c rmd160.c cc1: warning: -fPIC ignored for AIX (all code is position independent) In file included from rmd160.c:23: rmd160.h:39: syntax error before `void' In file included from rmd160.c:41: /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/powerpc-ibm- aix4.3.2.0/2.95.3/../../../../powerpc-ibm- aix4.3.2.0/include/assert.h:30: syntax error before `extern' But, 1.6.4 compiles just fine.. the problem is, that ext/socket never has a Makefile made for it. For good reason too, it just doesn't work, even if you hack out a Makefile (albeit, very very crude): compiling socket gcc -fPIC -g -O2 -DHAVE_GETADDRINFO -DHAVE_SA_LEN -DHAVE_SOCKADDR_STORAGE -DHAVE_SIN_LEN -I/data/ruby-1.6.4 -I/data/ruby-1.6.4 -I/usr/local/include -DHAVE_NETINET_TCP_H -DHAVE_NETINET_UDP_H -DHAVE_GETADDRINFO -DHAVE_GETNAMEINFO -DHAVE_SYS_UN_H -DHAVE_SOCKET -DHAVE_GETHOSTNAME -Dss_family=__ss_family -Dss_len=__ss_len -c socket.c cc1: warning: -fPIC ignored for AIX (all code is position independent) socket.c: In function `tcp_s_gethostbyname': socket.c:920: storage size of `addr' isn't known socket.c:944: warning: unreachable code at beginning of switch statement socket.c:986: warning: unreachable code at beginning of switch statement socket.c: In function `tcp_accept': socket.c:1084: storage size of `from' isn't known / Thomas Stromberg
