Subject: Symbols vs Strings

Two quick questions:

1)  Could someone expand on what a symbol is?  
	The Programming Ruby book seems to outline that a symbol is a string
with a colon in front of it.  
	The Agile Rails book calls it "the thing named .. "  

2)  If a Symbol is string substitution, why use symbols.

I feel I'm missing something obvious.

I suspect that getting #1 fully answered, will indirectly answer #2.
