Cheap hack:
$:.map{|s|s=~Regexp.new(Regexp.escape(Config::CONFIG['libdir']+'/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/')+'(.*)/lib$');$1}.compact

I'm sure if you dig through the RubyGems code, you'll find a better way 
of specifying that directory.
