Using the -n (or -p) option, you can ommit the while-loop:

  $ ruby -ne 'puts /^\d/ ? "Starts with digit" : "Nope"'

With -p option (prints out $_ in each iteration):

  $ ruby -pe '$_ = /^\d/ ? "Starts with digit" : "Nope"'
