  The problem is that scan returns an array of arrays:
[ # first match:
  [ #first group :
    "aaa",
    # second group:
    "bbb"
  ]
]

  So you might want in your case:

s, h = b.scan(/^(\w+)\s(\w+)$/)[0]
s, h = b.scan(/^(\w+)\s(\w+)$/).flatten
