You didn't claim that the difference in speed is important, but I'll
point out that none of your tests differ by more than 1.5%.  For the
kinds of things typically done in Ruby, this is probably not something
to lose sleep over.

But I'd still be interested to learn why one method is consistently
faster, if only to learn something about the language.
