It's available on HP-UX. uname -p does not work for our purposes. It is an invalid option in HP-UX, and returns unknown in Linux (at least on my box). uname -m returns the processor type in Linux, and the model number in HP-UX. This is the reason we were exploring RUBY_PLATFORM, as there is no straightforward way to determine what processor we are running under for HPUX.
