Bah, my stupid fault. It was binary mode at stake, but on reading, not writing. Mauricio Fern�ndez kindly pointed out my error. Changing the above to...
  File.open( 'desc.marshal', 'rb' ){ |f| @s2 = Marshal.load( f.read ) }
...fixed my problem.
