OK, let's change the problem a bit:
I know that I can get to port 80 on the server machine when the apache 
server is running (I can do: 'telnet <servername> 80' from a different 
machine and I get a connection), so I figured I'd try the simple web 
server on page 478 of the Pickaxe book (under the TCPServer class 
description).  I killed apache on the server and 
then ran the simple ruby web server (as root, since it's a port # < 1024).

On the server machine if I do: 
telnet localhost 80
it works, I get a connection and a response.
I can even go to http://localhost on that machine and I get the current 
time (which is what that simple server on Pg 478 does).  Fine and good.
Now when I go to another machine and try:
telnet <servername> 80
or try to get to http://<servername>
I get 'connection refused' - not so fine and good and basically the same 
behavior that I get when I try to use dRuby.

I don't understand this, given that I can get to the server from the other 
machines if apache is running, but not if this simple ruby web server is 
running.
