Subject: [ruby-talk:22022] Building Ruby on Windows, Using MinGW

First of all, please do not flood me with responses pointing out the
already-available precompiled MinGW version of Ruby. I know about it ;)

In the light of the recent discussions about moving away from a Cygwin-based
build of Ruby, towards either a Visual C++ or MinGW build, I thought I'd
take a crack at building Ruby using the latest MinGW packages (from
http://www.mingw.org). One thing I've observed right off the bat is that the
standard "configure" script for Ruby doesn't set the "-DNT" compiler flag,
which I think is going to be required in a lot of places. So I instead did:

    export CC="gcc -DNT"
    ./configure
    make

and it chugs along for awhile before choking while trying to compile
"./missing/strftime.c".

I'm fairly sure that if I futz around with that for awhile I'll figure out
what's wrong and get a little further along in the compilation. But before I
reinvent the wheel here, does anyone else know of any *other* gotchas when
compiling Ruby from source code using MinGW? And if they're known problems,
can we get the appropriate patches into CVS for Ruby 1.7?
