I apologize in advance for adding to an already off track thread.  The
problem is that Kevin doesn't understand how a compiler works and the
associated trade-offs in language design as evidenced by his above
statement.

To discuss the issue any further with him is pointless until he educates
himself enough to *understand* why the decision was made in the development
of ruby.

And for what it is worth Kevin, I don't understand enough about compiler
design to understand the choices made by Matz either but having taken a
course in compilers some years ago, I do realize that language design is
difficult and fraught with trade-offs.
