I don't have access to Windows XP (only Win98 at home, and Win2k here at work) so I can't give any concrete answers. I do know that Win32 error 1114 is: "A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed." and in practice this *usually* means that one of the DLLs that fox.so depends on is either missing or cannot be loaded for some other reason. So I ran cygcheck on the fox.so that is distributed with the Ruby 1.6.4-3 installer and got the results: Found: .\fox.so ..\fox.so c:\ruby\bin\cygwin-ruby16.dll C:\cygwin\bin\cygwin1.dll C:\WINNT\System32\KERNEL32.dll C:\WINNT\System32\NTDLL.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\USER32.dll C:\WINNT\System32\GDI32.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\ADVAPI32.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\RPCRT4.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\COMCTL32.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\GLU32.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\MSVCRT.dll C:\WINNT\System32\OPENGL32.dll C:\WINNT\System32\DDRAW.dll C:\WINNT\System32\DCIMAN32.dll C:\WINNT\System32\MPR.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\SHELL32.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\SHLWAPI.DLL C:\WINNT\System32\WINSPOOL.DRV Which is to say, fox.so depends on all of these libraries either directly or indirectly. I know that some versions of Windows 95 did not include the OpenGL runtime libraries (OPENGL32.DLL and GLU32.DLL) but *surely* those are standard in Windows XP (famous last words). Can you do a file find to confirm that all of these libraries are installed on your system? On a side note, it appears (after scanning the Cygwin mailing lists) that Cygwin support for Windows XP is shaky at best, and the Cygwin development team is not even worried about it until Windows XP is "officially" released later this month. In fact they've gotten a little hostile about the whole question, as evidenced by this post to the mailing list in September: http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2001-09/msg00436.html If (when) Windows XP is supported in Cygwin, it will definitely only be for the more recent 1.3.x releases of Cygwin; I wouldn't expect them to back-port any fixes to the Cygwin 1.1.x libraries that Ruby is currently built against. Something to consider for the Ruby-on-Windows maintainers, FWIW. Or for that matter, dump Cygwin altogether and move towards a native Windows (i.e. MinGW-based) distribution. Maybe this is something that we can all discuss at RubyConf? Lyle
