You might like Suraj N. Kurapati's work with ruby and wmii: 
http://people.ucsc.edu/~skurapat/wmii.html which allows you to do things 
like:
  selected_clients.each {|c| c.tag! 'foo'}

Of course there's also MFP's ruby-wmii
